Optional Practical Training - Unemployment
Unemployment is a harsh reality for many people including F- 1 students on OPT. You are generally allowed 90 days of unemployment while on OPT. Once you reach the 91st day, you are considered out of status.
There is no grace period whereas if you complete your OPT, you would have a 60 day grace period. If you receive a 17 month extension of post completion OPT, you are allowed 120 days of unemployment.
What can I do if I can't find a job while on OPT? I am getting close to 90 days of unemployment.

Here are several options you may not have considered:
1. Volunteer or unpaid internship - As long as you volunteer or work in an unpaid internship at least 20 hours a week, you are considered employed for OPT purposes. The position must be related to your degree program.
2. Employment through an agency - you may be able to find a temporary office job related to your degree program. You must work a least 20 hours per week.
3. Change of status to another visa - Before you reach 90 days you can consider changing to another visa. If you apply for a visa while out of status, you may have a problem obtaining a new visa.
