Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study.

OPT can be before you graduate (pre-completion) or after you graduate (post completion). Students are generally eligible for a total of 12 months of OPT but if you decide to pursue a higher degree, you are eligible for another 12 months.

Also there is an interim rule extending the period of OPT from 12 to 29 months for qualified F-1 students. The extension is available to F-1 students with a degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics who are employed by businesses enrolled in the E-Verify program. The purpose of the extension is so employers have two cycles in which to apply for H-1Bs for their OPT workers.

You must generally apply for post completion OPT between 90 days before and 60 days after the end of your program. Your school should be able to assist you.
